About West Hill |
The upstairs living room was tucked under the vaulted roofline of the timber frame. The only natural light that entered the room was from the adjoining balcony overlookign the first floor. The space had a certain "cave-like" feeling to it. The addition of two operable skylights added not only ventilation to the space, but also a wonderful soft light that transformed the space into a bright, airy room to read, listen to music, or watch movies. A large maple tree overhangs the roof and provides shade and a spectacular color show through the skylights in Autumn. Becasue of the exisiting roof structure, additional purlin (horizontal) and trimmer (vertical) beams had to be installed to provide structure to the roof where the penetrations were made for the skylights. |
