This bathroom was showing the signs of 60 years of use as the home's only bathroom. Several previous band-aid fixes kept it going but rot and fixtures begining to fail were threatening to put it out of commission. The aging homeowner was also looking for a more accesible scenario for the future. This project posed several challenges including the scheduling of the job since it was the famiy's only bathroom. It also was on a very tight budget. Basic, yet quality materials were chosen which lead to a crisp, functional bathroom. The space was compeltely gutted, rotting subfooring replaced, re-insulated and wired, and re-plumbed. The bathroom was tiled along with the connecting hallway and kitchen. The floor framing, while adequate by 1950 standards was not up to creaing a low-deflection floor to host tile so first a 1/4" cement board underlayment was layed over the subfloor. Then an underlayment product made by Blanke Corporation, called Permat was added for a bomb-proof installation. While it added some cost to the job, knowing the floor has very little chance of ever cracking was worth the extra expense. Then end result was a bathroom on a buidget that used qulity matrials in a simple fashion. It will be sure to serve the family for years to come.
