About West Hill |
This massive 4 story barn has weathered well over a hundred years high in the hills of Northfield. It is in remarkable shape, in large part due to the maintenance provided by the owner. Over time, however even well cared for barns need some attention and this barn's sill at the vehicle entrance to the 2nd floor had rotted away. There was an earthen ramp graded right up against the sill and uphill corner and over time the moisture did it's damage. The project was three pronged; 1) fix the problem and re-grade around the barn to prevent water from reaching the structure 2) replace the rotted structure, sheathing and siding and 3) build a new set of doors to replace the hinged ones that were worn out and sagging. In this case the doors were reconstructed as sliding doors. The drainage was solved with an underground roof that drains into a perimeter curtain drain on the gable end and the uphill eave side. On the downhill eave side a surface swale was installed to carry water off a soggy area of lawn. The last component of the drainage projcet was to construct a new entrance ramp for vehicles that spanned the newly lowered grade. The sill and a section of rotted post were repalced with new hemlock beams and secured with carriage bolts, lag screws, steel plate, and brackets. |
